Cow Crash

Belvidere, NJ: (Feb-7-08) Stephen Van Campen of Independence Township, a former Warren County Community College trustee, brought charges against the city and Hackettstown Livestock Auction, after he sustained injuries when an escaped cow collided with his car. Records show that the cow escaped May 18, 2003 from the Hackettstown Livestock Auction building on Stiger Street in Hackettstown before wandering a mile onto Petersburg Road in neighboring Independence Township. The cow bolted from farmers who boarded an all-terrain vehicle and pursued the cow until it walked into the path of a car driven by Stephen Van Campen.

The suit claimed that Van Campen suffered permanent injuries in the crash, including a shock to his nervous system, which resulted in fluid around his heart. Sources close to the case stated that the parties had reached a settlement in which Van Campen will receive $40,000, resolving his personal injury claims. Court records show half that amount is coming from the operators of the livestock auction. [EXPRESS TIMES: COW CRASH]
