Irvine, CA: (Jan-10-08) Star Instruments and RC Optical Systems brought a lawsuit against Meade Instruments Corp., a leading designer and manufacturer of optical products, including telescopes, riflescopes, binoculars and microscopes, and its dealers, alleging that the company named its product so as to mislead customers. As part of a settlement reached, Meade Instruments Corp. agreed to pay the plaintiffs a substantial monetary recovery. It also agreed to pay a de minimus amount to the plaintiffs and to rename their ground breaking RCX product, not using any initials that might suggest Ritchey-Chretien in the name. Meade officials stated that the company will be under no restrictions in referencing the Ritchey-Chretien-like benefits of the RCX product, such as the elimination of coma, which many people feel is the single largest benefit of the Ritchey-Chretien optical system.
