City Clerk

Nevada City, CA: (Jan-08-08) Cathy Wilcox-Barnes, a former city clerk, brought a lawsuit against the city for wrongful termination. The suit stated that Wilcox-Barnes was fired as office supervisor when her position was eliminated. Auditors say the city failed to collect nearly $400,000 in utility bills and business license fees during her 20-year tenure. She sued in April 2007, seeking $2 million in damages. Sources close to the case stated that the two sides had reached a settlement, in which the city agreed to pay its city clerk $275,000 for eliminating her previous job overseeing the city's finances. Additionally, the city also apologized for implying that Wilcox-Barnes was incompetent and stated that the city's financial troubles were due to operational problems and understaffing.
