Employee Gender Discrimination
Phoenix, AZ: (Dec-31-07) The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) brought charges against SunWest Federal Credit Union, alleging that two female employees were subjected to sexual and gender harassment by a former manager. The suit, filed on behalf of the two women, claimed that the SunWest manager harassed the women on the basis of their gender, including leering at them and touching them without their consent, referring to women in slanderous terms, and otherwise yelling at, demeaning and intimidating female employees. The suit stated that SunWest further discriminated against Marlene Wight when it retaliated against her for complaining about the harassment, including allowing the harassing manager to threaten her. SunWest was also accused of changing her job title, giving her unrealistic goals to meet and, ultimately, terminating her employment.
As part of a settlement reached, SunWest Federal Credit Union agreed to a $250,000 payout and substantial remedial relief to be awarded to the two women. In addition to paying $250,000 to the two women, the EEOC settlement by consent decree requires SunWest to provide training and other relief aimed at educating its employees about sexual harassment, retaliation and their rights under Title VII.
