Gender Discrimination
Phoenix, AZ: (Dec-17-07) The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) brought charges against Phoenix-based SunWest Federal Credit Union, alleging that the company discriminated against its employees. The suit claimed that two female employees were subjected to sexual and gender harassment by a former manager. They accused the manager of harassing them on the basis of their gender, leering at them, touching them without consent, and verbally attacking them. The EEOC's suit stated that sexual and general harassment and retaliation for complaining about the harassment violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The commission filed the suit after first attempting to reach a voluntary settlement.
Sources stated that as part of a settlement agreement reached, the company agreed to pay the two women $250,000 to resolve allegations. Additionally, SunWest agreed to provide training and other relief to educate its employees about sexual harassment, retaliation and their rights. [EAST VALLEY TRIBUNE: GENDER BIAS]
