Cell Phone Chip Patent

Orange County, CA: (Nov-23-07) Broadcom Corp., an Irvine chipmaker, brought charges against San Diego rival Qualcomm Inc., alleging that the company infringed on its patents. The suit claimed that Qualcomm's infringement of Broadcom's patents was willful, an allegation that was upheld by a Santa Ana jury's finding. As part of a settlement reached, records show that Broadcom Corp. is set to get nearly $20 million in damages from Qualcomm to resolve the patent dispute. Sources state that the settlement stems from an earlier decision by a federal judge that Qualcomm should pay Broadcom for infringing on three patents for chips that go into cell phones.
