Building Inspector Harassment

Hayward, CA: (Nov-14-07) Margaret Dufresne, a longtime building inspector, brought charges against the Hayward Police Department, alleging that she was harassed and faced discrimination based on her gender and sexual orientation at her workplace. She further claimed that the department fostered a hostile work environment that led to the departure of the longtime building official.

As part of a settlement reached, a jury sided with Dufresne, awarding her $472,890 in the case. The department still faces a lawsuit filed by a group of female police employees who say they were subjected to severe and pervasive sexual harassment and discrimination at the Hayward Police Department. All of the women say they were exposed to a hostile work environment and retaliation because of their gender and, in many cases, their sexual orientation. The women, who live in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Joaquin, and Santa Clara counties, all said Hayward Police Department supervisors retaliated against them for protesting their harassment, and that they were denied employment, promotion, special assignments and special recognition. Some say they were demoted or fired. [OROVILLE MERCURY REGISTER: CITY EMPLOYEE BIAS]
