Apartment Fire

Chicago, IL: (Nov-13-07) The families of six children killed in a Rogers Park fire brought charges against the owners and managers of the apartment building, Marshway Limited Partnership, Marshway, and CIG Management, for allegedly being responsible for the wrongful deaths. The suit stated that a smoke detector had been removed from the third floor apartment and one in the hallway never sounded when the fire broke out. An independent fire safety professional found that each of the other 14 units in the building had a working smoke detector at the time of the fire. An investigation showed that the family used candles to light the apartment, and one started the blaze. As part of a settlement reached, Marshway Limited Partnership, Marshway, and CIG Management, agreed to a $6 million settlement to resolve the lawsuit. [CBS NEWS: APARTMENT FIRE]
