Principal Removed

Beaufort County, SC: (Nov-12-07) Former principal LaVerne Davis brought charges against the Beaufort County School District, alleging that the district wrongfully removed Davis as principal of St. Helena Elementary School in 2004. As part of a settlement reached, the district agreed to pay Davis $60,000 as well as required that both sides keep terms of the settlement confidential. In exchange, Davis would have to drop all legal claims against the district and former superintendent Herman Gaither, who recommended in March 2004 the school board not renew Davis' contract, leading to Davis' removal. The agreement also stipulated that the district keep secret all documents in Davis' personnel file that include derogatory or unfavorable remarks made by Gaither and that none of the documents ever be copied. The details of the settlement agreement were made public after the state's chief law officer said it was illegal to keep such agreements secret. [BEAUFORT GAZETTE: FIRED PRINCIPAL]
