Religious Studies Professor

Broward, FL: (Oct-17-07) James Johnson, former religious studies professor, brought charges against Broward Community College, alleging that he faced religious discrimination from his superiors. The suit claimed that Johnson, a Catholic, was denied promotions and teaching assignments, because his evangelical Protestant boss discriminated against him. He filed suit in 2005, stating that teaching assignments and promotions dried up for non-evangelicals when Winston Thompson, an evangelical Protestant, became head of the Religion Department. Johnson sought damages, claiming the college fired him in retaliation for complaining about courses he believed promoted evangelical viewpoints. As apart of a settlement reached, Broward Community College agreed to pay Johnson $250,000 to resolve the suit. [SUN SENTINEL: RELIGIOUS DISCRIMINATION]
