Permanent Paraplegia
Porter County, IL: (Oct-13-07) Lisa Keppen, a Porter County woman, filed a lawsuit against USF Holland, after being paralyzed in an automobile accident with a USF Holland semi trailer. The suit claimed that Keppen, who was 20 at the time of the accident, was a passenger in a car driven by Anthony Hardin. Keppen was on route to her Valparaiso home when a USF Holland semi trailer driven by Dale Gilchrist of Rolling Prairie pulled in front of Hardin's 1993 Mazda. The June 2002 crash resulted in Keppen's permanent paraplegia. Sources state that she can no longer walk and suffers from chronic pain and depression.
As part of a settlement reached, USF Holland agreed to pay Keppen $24 million to resolve the suit. The agreement stated that the payments will be made over the duration of Keppen's life expectancy. According to the filing, medical care is estimated to cost Keppen between $5.5 million and $5.9 million for the remainder of her life. [POST TRIBUNE: PARALYZED CRASH]
