Farm Workers Overtime, Three Mile Canyon Farm pays $250,000 settlement to employees

Boardman, OR: (Oct-01-07) Several farm workers filed suit against the Three Mile Canyon Farm, alleging that they were not paid overtime wages. The suit claimed that about 130 people worked overtime at the Three Mile Canyon farm in Boardman, Oregon. But Oregon Public Broadcasting reported they were paid straight time because management claimed that agricultural laborers don't have to be paid overtime. In a recent development the US district court has now ruled that since the workers were bagging compost for public sale, it was not agricultural work and therefore, overtime had to be paid. As part of a settlement reached, the Three Mile Canyon Farm will pay $250,000 to the farm workers to resolve the lawsuit. Sources stated that the staff will get more than $1,000 each. The settlement comes after the Three Mile Canyon and farm workers reached a union agreement in mid 2007. [KNDU NEWS: FARM WORKERS' OVERTIME]
