Palm Beach County School District

Palm Beach County, FL: (Sep-16-07) Claudia and Jeffrey Kautz, the parents of 15-year-old Diana Kautz, brought a lawsuit against Palm Beach County School District, after their daughter died in a November 2004 school bus accident. An analysis of the crash showed that bus driver Maria Abrahantes ran a stop sign just before the bus smashed into a pickup truck. Diana Kautz, a freshman at Royal Palm Beach High School, was thrown from the bus and killed. The Kautzs fought the frustrating legal battle only to be disillusioned as the suit did not move the district to change its policy on seat belt enforcement on school buses. All buses bought since 2000 have seat belts, but their use is not mandatory. Bus drivers are trained to instruct students to wear them. In a settlement reached, the Palm Beach County School District agreed to pay the family $1.1 million, ending the wrongful death lawsuit. [SUN SENTINEL: BUS ACCIDENT DEATH]
