Rocori School District

Rocori, MN: (Aug-14-07) The families of Aaron Rollins and Seth Bartell, two students killed by John Jason McLaughlin in a September 2003 shooting at the high school, filed a lawsuit against the Rocori School District, former high school principal Douglas Standke and the parents of John Jason McLaughlin. The civil lawsuits had been dismissed by a judge earlier in 2007, and the case had been appealed to the Minnesota Court of Appeals. In order to avoid the costs of protracted litigation, the defendants agreed on settling the lawsuit. The settlements, approved by the school board, call for the district's insurance and the insurance of McLaughlin's parents to pay $200,000 to the families of Aaron Rollins and Seth Bartell. The district, which is self-insured, will pay $133,333 of that amount. None of the district's portion of the settlement will come from district general funds. John Jason McLaughlin is not a part of the settlement and the claims against him still are pending. He was convicted of two counts of murder for the deaths of Rollins and Bartell.
