Philadelphia, PA

Philadelphia, PA: (Jul-03-07) The professors union brought a lawsuit against 14 state universities over pay hikes, threatening to strike if an agreement was not in place by the time the previous contract expired. It delayed a work stoppage for 24 hours to give negotiations one last chance, which in the end was the ticket needed to settle the matter. Faculty at the 14 state universities reached a tentative agreement on a four-year pact that will push top professors' base salaries into the six-figure range. The settlement granted all of the 5,500 professors a $1,750 cash payment this year, followed by across-the-board raises of 3% in 2008, 2009, and 2010 and 4% in 2011, according to sources. In addition, eligible faculty will receive 2.5% or 5% increments for movement up the salary scale. Also, senior faculty will receive a cash payment of 2.5% of their salary in the fourth year. 2006's nine-month base salary range was $43,848 to $91,148. This will boost it to $44,795 to $110,567 by the fourth year of the contract. The agreement has faculty continuing to pay 10% of their health insurance premium for the first three years, then the co-pay would rise to 15 % in the final year. Faculty who do not participate in a wellness programs would pay 15 % of the premium in the third year and a quarter of the premium in the final year. [PENN LIVE: FACULTY CONTRACT]
