University of Wisconsin-Madison

Madison, WI: (Jun-16-07) Paul Barrows, former University of Wisconsin-Madison vice chancellor, filed a series of lawsuits against the university, after he was asked to resign, claiming he was unfairly treated by the college. Chancellor John Wiley told Barrows to resign in November 2004 after learning of his relationship with a 40-year-old graduate student and receiving a memo from the Dean of Students, Luoluo Hong, that made other accusations about Barrows' inappropriate behavior toward women.

Wiley then allowed Barrows to go on sick leave and collect his $191,000 salary for eight months while he looked for other jobs. Barrows eventually returned to the university in a lower-level backup job he had been guaranteed. Angry lawmakers demanded an investigation into the matter.

A school-ordered probe said Barrows' consensual relationship with the student was unprofessional, but broke no school rules. The investigation concluded he sexually harassed two other female employees. The investigation led to reprimands against Barrows for the harassment and Wiley for signing off on Barrows' sick leave when he knew he was not ill. Barrows vowed to clear his name, filing lawsuits and legal complaints claiming he was unfairly treated. An appeals committee later cleared him of sexual harassment.

In a settlement reached, the University of Wisconsin-Madison System Board of Regents agreed to pay Barrows $135,000 in exchange for dropping several legal claims against the university. [CAPTIAL TIMES: CHANCELLOR TERMINATION]
