Beaufort County School District

Beaufort County, SC: (Jun-06-07) Six lawsuits were filed against the Beaufort County School District, related to the 2002 arrest of Phillip Underwood-Sheppard, a former Coosa Elementary School music teacher who molested at least nine students ages 6 to 13. Underwood-Sheppard pleaded guilty but mentally ill to nine counts of indecent exposure, seven counts of performing a lewd act upon a child, and one count of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison in April 2003. In a settlement reached, the Beaufort County School District agreed to pay $4.5 million to the victims. The district's insurance coverage will provide about $300,000 of the settlement amount. [ISLAND PACKET: STUDENTS MOLESTATION]
