Cadillac, MI

Cadillac, MI: (May-22-07) The mother of a student who was pepper-sprayed by a police officer at school, filed a lawsuit against the city of Cadillac. Police officials stated that the Cadillac Junior High student refused to leave the school's cafeteria and attempted to strike at the officer, though the suit claimed that the girl was only trying to avoid the officer's grasp before being pepper sprayed. The mother says the disciplinary action was too extreme and she sued the city. In a settlement reached, the city agreed to pay $27,000 to the mother to resolve the civil charges. The city's insurance company recommended the lawsuit be settled since the cost to try the case would have exceeded that amount. Both the insurance company and the city's mayor say they still believe the officer acted appropriately. [74 NEWS: PEPPER SPRAYED STUDENT]
