San Bernardino County, CA

San Bernardino County, CA: (May-21-07) Grover Merritt, a candidate in the 2006 district attorney elections, filed suit against the city, alleging that he was fired from his job so he would not challenge San Bernardino County District Attorney Michael Ramos. Merritt accused Assistant District Attorney Michael Risley of leaking secret documents to the press with Ramos' approval, so that Merritt could be accused of the leak. The suit claimed that Merritt suffered trauma and defamation as a result of his wrongful termination. In a settlement reached, San Bernardino County paid Merritt $300,000 and restored him to his previous job as Appellate Services Unit chief, though neither side admitted fault. The Merritt-Ramos court fight cost San Bernardino County taxpayers at least $444,303, including $146,803 in legal fees. [PE.COM: WRONGFUL TERMINATION]
