Chicago, IL

Chicago, IL: (May-09-07) In a settlement reached with five plaintiffs shot or grazed by bullets fired by Chicago Police officers, the city agreed to pay $1.96 million to resolve claims, ending the last of the suits against them following the ugly aftermath of the Bulls' sixth NBA championship of the 1990s. The suit stemmed from an incident when a car carrying five people inside and six others piled on top pulled up to a food and liquor store at Roosevelt and Springfield. When the car made a U turn, coming up to the sidewalk where some Chicago Police officers were standing, the officers fired 25 shots, claiming the car was trying to hit them, injuring the people in car. Evidence showed that the bullets hit the front, side and rear of the car. The settlement follows two earlier ones, bringing the total payout to nearly $4 million.
