Portland Public Schools

This is a settlement for the Commercial lawsuit.

Portland, OR: (Apr-24-07) A class action lawsuit filed against the Portland Public School District, accused it of contracting out custodial work to save money amid financial turmoil. The suit alleged that the district violated Oregon State labor law when it hired Portland Habilitation Center workers to replace its union custodians despite union protests. The Portland Public Schools board unanimously agreed to pay $14.5 million, believed to be the district's largest legal settlement, to 280 custodians laid off in 2002. Each custodian stands to receive $37,000 as back pay and other damages. To date, the district has hired back 124 of the custodians who were laid off. [OREGON LIVE: CUSTODIAN CONTRACT SETTLEMENT]
