New Albany and Mayor James Garner

New Albany, IN: (Mar-20-07) A federal lawsuit was filed against Mayor James Garner and New Albany claiming Stephen Broadus had been wrongly fired because he refused to violate building codes. Broadus believed he could not be responsible for ignoring violations that could have led to destruction of personal property and lives. Garner contested, saying that Broadus was fired for insubordination because he circulated a letter to the City Council about problems in the building department. A settlement was reached in which New Albany and Mayor James Garner agreed to pay $125,000 to end the lawsuit, though not admitting to any wrongdoing. [COURIER JOURNAL: BUILDING CODE TERMINATION]
