Swanton Local Board of Education

Swanton, VT: (Mar-01-07) A lawsuit filed by June Price, former English teacher, against the Swanton Local Board of Education in US District Court in Toledo, accused the board and other school officials of perpetuating a pattern of racial discrimination, hostility, and disciplinary retaliation against her. Price, who is African-American, claimed that officials subjected her to disparate employment treatment as compared to similarly situated white employees; denied her the right to make and enforce contracts enjoyed by white citizenry; subjected her to deprivation of rights and privileges secured by federal law, and conspired to deprive her of equal privileges under the law. The school board agreed to a $300,000 settlement with Price, as well as agreed to reinstate her and remove any unfavorable evaluations from her personnel file.
