Rogue Valley Medical Center

Medford, MA: (Feb-23-07) A lawsuit filed by the Oregon Nurses Association against Asante Corp.'s Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford accused it of low staffing levels and resulting grievances. The suit addressed complaints of low staffing which meant nurses were generally unable to take breaks for meals or trips to the bathroom and a lack of compensation for overtime work. The medical center resolved the lawsuit and settled claims by agreeing to pay a $500,000 retroactive payment to staff nurses for missed breaks in 2006 and a comprehensive plan to address the chronic staffing shortages. The plan includes the immediate posting of 27 full-time-equivalent registered nurse positions estimated to cost the hospital about $1.8 million per year.
