Fontana, CA

Fontana, CA: (Mar-04-07) The family of Randy Perchez sued the city after he was shot in the collarbone and ribs in February 2004 as he struggled to escape officers who were searching his mother's house. The officer responsible, Officer Richard Guerrero, later testified that he shot Perchez because Perchez had grabbed his flashlight and he feared for his life. In a settlement reached, Perchez's mother, Cathy Olivas, received $825,000 and his father, Randy Perchez Sr., got $175,000. The payment will be made by the city's insurance company, AIG. Fontana was liable for the first $250,000, most of which was consumed by legal bills. [MERCURY NEWS: POLICE STRUGGLE]
