Davie County, NC

Mocksville, NC: (Feb-20-07) The Davie County Board of Commissioners and County Attorney reached a settlement in a lawsuit that alleged that a sheriff's deputy was grossly negligent and malicious in causing a fatal wreck in 2004. Of the $975,000 that Davie County will pay out, $275,000 will go toward the estate of Mary Ruth Smith, who died two weeks after the wreck. Another $700,000 will go toward Patricia Diane Keaton, Smith's daughter, who was injured in the wreck. Dana Kelly Recktenwald, a deputy for four months at the time of the collision, was responding to a call about an armed man when she crossed the centerline and hit a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am carrying Keaton, Smith, and Grady Smith Jr., Keaton's brother.
