Scenic Chevron and Evanston Insurance Co.

Baton Rouge, LA: (Feb-15-07) Signs at Scenic Chevron, a gasoline station, obstructed the view of traffic and caused Melissa Benton's death when she collided with a speeding off duty police officer. The Louisiana state district court panel said Officer Paul Rhea and the city-parish government of East Baton Rouge were 20 percent liable for its $1.6 million judgment in Melissa Benton's death. That would have put its liability at $320,000, but the city-parish agreed to pay $325,000 in a settlement. The gasoline station will pay $1.3 million to 11-year-old Jonqualya Benton, the victim's daughter. Jurors deliberated for more than seven hours before finding Scenic Chevron and its insurer, Evanston Insurance Co., 80 percent liable. [NEWS FLASH: SIGNAGE ACCIDENT]
