On July 1, 2003, Reverend Bradford Brault his 20-year-old daughter Melanie Brault were stopped in a work zone on Interstate 80 while on their way to a White Sox game in Chicago. A tractor trailer driven by Len Nord came up from behind and struck the Brault's car. Nord's rig rode over the top of the car and crushed it; Bradford and Melanie were killed. Bradford was a Methodist minister in Hennepin and Melanie was studying to be a teacher at Oral Roberts University. Becky Brault, widow of Bradford and mother of Melanie, filed a lawsuit against Nord's employer in La Salle County Circuit Court. The lawsuit claimed Nord failed to observe or failed to follow the instructions of the construction zone. Attorneys settled the lawsuit for $7.4 million.
