San Diego County, CA

San Diego - Marshawn Washington was waiting at San Diego County Jail to transfer to state prison to serve a sentence for selling cocaine. His arms and legs were bound behind his back during a struggle with deputies. Washington complained he couldn't breathe and then stopped moving. He was checked by nurses before being dragged into a padded cell, where he died. A medical examiner said the cause of death was a heart attack. Marchawn's wife, Bertha Washington, filed a lawsuit against the county alleging her husband died in jail because deputies mishandled him. San Diego County has agreed to pay $400,000 to the widow.
