Ralphs Grocery Co.
During a 2003 strike and lockout, Ralphs Grocery Co. allegedly hired hundreds of workers under fake names and violated laws involving employee benefits and record-keeping for the Social Security Administration and Internal Revenue Service. The grocery store chain has agreed to pay $70 million in restitution and fines including $50 million to Ralphs employees who were locked out during the labor dispute and for the illegal hiring of some locked out employees during the strike. About 19,000 Ralphs workers were kept from their jobs at Southern California stores. The company estimated fewer than 300 people worked illegally. (Jun-30-06)
