Monongalia General Hospital

In 1997, complications arose during Ms. Pochron's labor at the general hospital. Her obstetrician, Louise Van Riper, allegedly neglected to perform an emergency C-section. Baby Marissa was deprived of oxygen and she suffered severe brain damage. The Porchron family filed a lawsuit against the hospital alleging medical malpractice after Marissa was abandoned by the nursing staff, left alone and later found blue and not breathing. Marissa was ultimately revived and taken by a rescue team to Ruby Memorial Hospital at the University of West Virginia where she was saved and stabilized on a ventilator. Marissa now suffers from cerebral palsy and is confined to a wheelchair; her family has been awarded a $17 million medical malpractice settlement. (Mar-28-06) [KDKA 2 NEWS]
