John F. Ames

The Caroline County lawyer and cattle farmer lived next to 74-year-old Perry Brooks for nearly 15 years and the two became longtime rivals. In April 2004, one of Brook's bulls wandered onto Ames' property, so he went to retrieve it from his neighbor. Ames claimed Brooks came at him with a 3-foot stick and acted in self defense by shooting Brooks. Brooks' family filed a $10.4 million wrongful death lawsuit against Ames. John Ames and his insurance company, Northern Neck Insurance Co., agreed to pay a $100,000 settlement. (Feb-21-06) [FREE LANCE STAR]
