On Dec. 3, 2001 Charles Craighead and his girlfriend, Joyce McDougle were stopped by a carjacker. Craighead got out of the car and began to struggle with the assailant. Officer Michael Lee responded to the seen just as Craighead had managed to get the gun out of the carjacker's possession. Lee fired a round from his shotgun, striking Craighead and Carlos Scott. Craighead's daughters, Sherell and Shenita filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city. The case went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court and ended up awarding the family a $400,000 settlement.
