City of New Bern

Three sons and their father were sailing down Trent River when the mast of their sailboat contacted power lines near a train trestle. Zach, 17, and his brother Alex, 14, died in the accident. Chris, 11, and his father Manny Lourenco survived the electrocution. The family filed a lawsuit against the city claiming the lines were not up to code. The city of New Bern has agreed to a $2 million settlement where Chris will receive $200,000 a year for 10 years beginning at the age of 30. (Nov-11-05) [MYRTLE BEACH ONLINE]
