Trade Winds Distributing Inc. and Driver

In 2003, Missouri State Highway Patroller Michael Newton was rear ended by a Trade Winds driver while on duty. Newton's Ford Crown Victoria patrol car caught fire; killing him and severely burning his passenger, Michael Nolte. Newton's family and Nolte filed a lawsuit against Ford alleging the design of the Crown Victoria, with the fuel tank located between the rear bumper and the rear axle, partly contributed to the explosion. A jury found that Ford Motor Co. was not liable. The jury did find Trade Winds and their driver guilty and awarded $8.5 million in damages to Nolte as well as Newton's family.
