Police officers David Vetare and Ronald Palmer were in pursuit of a drunk driver who ended up hitting four pedestrians while trying to escape. The lawsuit claimed the officers were negligent and reckless in their handling of the drunken driving incident. Thomas Burns, the drunk driver, pleaded no contest to charges of first-degree assault, four counts of second-degree assault with a motor vehicle, assault on a police officer and evading responsibility. The city of Norwalk has agreed to pay the pedestrians $1.5 million in damages. (Mar-14-05)
