States See More Lawsuits over Yasmin Birth Control

. By Charles Benson

Hot on the heels of the recent declaration of mass tort in New Jersey, law offices around the country are seeing a continuing rise in the number of lawsuits surrounding Yaz birth control.

There have been multiple filings in Pennsylvania against Bayer, the maker of the birth control product, and now a total of 47 cases in Indiana are charging the pharmaceutical company with failing to adequately warn women of the serious side effects that can arise from using the product.

Yaz and its generic equivalent Ocella contain ethinyl estradiol and progestin drospirenone, two chemical compounds that have been linked to deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolisms, complications of the gallbladder, stroke, heart attack and death.

Bayer claims that its products currently contain an appropriate amount of warnings about potential side effects and has started gathering information on the plaintiffs that have levied lawsuits against the company.

Litigation is expected to focus on Bayer's knowledge of the risks its product poses, whether or not it fully disclosed its research to the FDA, and what information, if any, it withheld from the general public.
