A fatal car crash that occurred two years ago has resulted in a $6.5 million settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by an Illinois family, according to the Dubuque Telegraph Herald.

On October 31, 2008, Tabitha Carroll, 32, was driving to a pumpkin patch with her family in Huntley, Illinois, when a semi-tractor trailer driven by Jeffrey Repec rear-ended the pickup truck in which she was a passenger, pushing it into a vehicle belonging to the Illinois Department of Transportation. Carroll was pronounced dead at the scene, while her husband Randolph and three-year-old son Gabriel sustained injuries.

A police investigation at the time of the crash revealed that Repec had been driving while under the influence of marijuana. In a criminal trial, after pleading guilty to aggravated driving under the influence of drugs, Repec was sentenced to a 45-month stay in the Jacksonville (Illinois) Correctional Center.

The $6.5 million settlement included $4.7 million for the wrongful death of Carroll, plus $1.5 million and $300,000 for the injuries sustained by Carroll's husband and son, respectively.
