Washington Car Accident Claims the Life of Bangor Sailor

. By Charles Benson

A tragic Washington car accident claimed the life of an 18-year-old sailor stationed at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor over the weekend.

At roughly 3:30 pm on Saturday, April 10, Mark S. Schroeder Jr., a native of Fontana, California, was driving southbound on Highway 3 when he allegedly overcorrected a turn and plowed headlong into a power pole, totaling the car and injuring all inside.

The vehicle's three passengers, all of whom were aged 19 or 20 and were stationed at the same naval base as the deceased, were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Only one of the passengers had not been released as of Saturday night, according to the Kitsap Sun.

All in the car were wearing seat belts, and a Washington State Patrol spokeswoman says that drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be involved in the incident.

In 2009, Washington experienced a total of 483 fatal car and truck accidents - the fewest accidents seen in the Evergreen State since 1955, according to the Washington State Traffic Safety Commission.
