Texting While Driving Causes Texas Car Crash

. By Charles Benson

A 24-year-old Darien man was arrested last week in the aftermath of a Texas car crash that may have resulted from text messaging while driving.

Around 12:40 am on March 4, Aaron Lilly struck a parked car with his Jeep, disorienting the driver and sending the vehicle into a roll. Lilly, who was unharmed in the incident, later admitted to police that he had been text messaging at the time of the collision.

"He was very lucky to be OK," Captain Fred Komm of the Darien Police told the Darien Times.

Police reports claim that both vehicles sustained severe damage and required a tow truck to remove them from the scene. The owner of the parked car claims that it was totaled in the wreck.

Texting while driving has been a hot button issue for lawmakers across the country, many of whom have introduced legislation that would make the practice illegal. Earlier in the year, the Department of Transportation issued a federal ban on texting and using a handheld cell phone while driving for all commercial vehicles.
