Death Toll Rises in Reno Plane Crash

. By Heidi Turner

The death toll in a Reno plane crash has reportedly risen to nine, with more than 50 people injured, some of them seriously. Initial reports said that three people died in the plane accident, in which a plane involved in a race plunged into the spectator stands. Killed in the airplane crash were the pilot, Jimmy Leeward, and eight spectators.

The pilot was flying a vintage P-51 Mustang. CNN reported that one witness believed the pilot pulled up in the last few seconds before hitting the bleachers and hit the ground instead, possibly saving hundreds of lives.

Meanwhile, in a separate event, a US military plane involved in an air show crashed in a fireball, killing the pilot. No one on the ground was critically injured. The NTSB is investigating both plane crashes.
