Lancaster, CAThe son of an 89-year-old woman who died of heat stroke has filed a lawsuit alleging elder care neglect on the part of the home. The wrongful death lawsuit claims the home where the victim lived was negligent in allowing the victim to develop heat stroke.
According to a CBS report, (06/20/12), Ronald Corn, who is represented by attorney R. Rex Parris, filed the lawsuit following the death of his mother, who was allegedly left outside in temperatures higher than 100 degrees. The lawsuit was filed against Sunrise Sterling Canyon Assisted Living of Valencia, where Loretta Hooker lived since July 2007.
Corn says he arrived at the home on August 24, 2011, and found his mother alone and unresponsive on a patio with no shade. She showed signs of respiratory distress and was taken to a local hospital, where she died of heatstroke. Her internal temperature was reportedly 103.3 degrees when she died.
Corn's lawsuit alleges elder abuse, negligence, fraud and wrongful death.
"She died from heat exhaustion," Parris told CBS (see video below). "It's a serious crime to treat your dog that way, and we're allowing people to treat our parents that way."
Officials from Sunrise issued a statement that they take allegations of wrongdoing seriously and work to provide residents with the best care possible.
