Portland, ORCarole, Tana and Amy all believe that Mirena is the cause of their miscarriages and infertility problems. The three women have since had the IUD removed, but the physical and emotional scars caused by Mirena side effects will stay with them, possibly for the rest of their lives.
“My doctors told me that my problems couldn’t possibly stem from Mirena,” says Amy. “In fact my (soon-to-be-former) GP called it a ‘wonderful product’ and that makes me even more frustrated and furious. Soon after I had the Mirena IUD implanted, I developed severe abdominal pains and very heavy bleeding. I was then informed that I had pelvic inflammatory disease [PID], which is typically a sexually transmitted disease but I am almost certain it came from this Mirena.”
Amy’s problems escalated. In the past few years, she had three surgeries due to the PID, including a partial hysterectomy. “Mirena has robbed me of the right to have children,” she says, crying. “This led to my wedding being called off and my family falling apart. It seemed as if I was no longer the person I once was. I was depressed due to the problems resulting from the IUD, and the fact that I could no longer have children. This may sound crazy but I know that I’m not the only one who has suffered this much irreversible damage because of Mirena. The IUD took so much away from me, and I'm still to this day trying to cope.”
Indeed, Amy is not alone. Two years ago, Tana, age 28, had PID and she spent a week in the hospital, recovering after getting a tumor - the size of a grapefruit - removed. “As well, they had to scrape my uterus to get the Mirena out; it was embedded in my uterine wall. That has to be one of the most painful things I have ever endured. Now my ovaries have cysts that burst and my uterus and fallopian tubes are so scarred, I was told that I don’t have much chance of having children. Now I’m battling depression and can’t see how I’m ever going to recover.”
Lastly, Carole had her Mirena removed under anaesthetic - it had perforated her uterus. “My OB/GYN and an ultrasound technician both made it very clear that Mirena has altered the ability for my body to have children, at least for a while,” she says. “I had the IUD removed six months ago and not a day goes by that I don’t worry if it has caused permanent damage. My husband and I have always looked forward to having a family; I just hope it isn’t too late.”
It isn’t too late to file a Mirena claim. The FDA has warned Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals - the Mirena manufacturer - about its birth control implant Mirena; the IUD has led to hundreds of lawsuits stemming from Mirena birth control side effects, including Mirena uterine perforation. Lawsuits allege the product is defective and unreasonably dangerous, and Bayer is accused of intentionally selling a dangerous product, deceptive advertising and concealing the risk of complications.
Since Mirena was FDA-approved in 2000, more than 45,000 adverse events have been reported to the FDA, including device expulsion, device dislocation and vaginal hemorrhage.
