Mirena User Suffers Miscarriage, Now Filing Mirena Lawsuit

When Katie found out she was pregnant, she had her Mirena intrauterine device removed. Sadly, she miscarried. Katie got pregnant about a year later but had an ectopic pregnancy. Her gynecologist blames Mirena.

Katie, age 23 and mother of two (ages four and six), recently got remarried. She and her second husband were looking forward to having kids of their own.

“Now I have to explain to my kids that they can’t have any more brothers or sisters,” says Katie, crying. “I was 16 years old when I had my first child; they are my life, my pride and joy. Being only 23 and not being able to have any more kids breaks my heart.”

When Katie had the Mirena IUD implanted after she gave birth to her second (and last) child in early 2009, her doctor said it was safe and there were no Mirena side effects. But Mirena was not only ineffective as a method of birth control, it has also ruined the possibility of Katie having any more kids.

In April 2010, after her miscarriage, she had the Mirena removed. “I had a miscarriage because the baby didn’t form and when I got pregnant again, in late 2011, it was ruled an ectopic pregnancy,” Katie says. “My gynecologist explained to me that I can produce the hormone to get pregnant but I cannot hold the baby. I had to have a D&C.

“I know the Mirena is to blame and my gynecologist told me as much. I was pissed when he told me. I asked him how a device that causes infertility can be on the market ??" it is unbelievable that Bayer is allowed to sell this. He gave me a lot of paperwork on Mirena birth control side effects, which I brought home. My husband and I read about Mirena uterine perforation; how Mirena causes infertility, miscarriages, cysts on ovaries and more.

"I am so mad because I lost two babies. After the miscarriage I had a lot of blood work to determine whether or not I was able to carry again and what caused the miscarriage. I blame my doctor to some extent but I wasn’t supposed to get pregnant with this device. It is guaranteed for five years but I got pregnant after having it for just one year.

"Thankfully I have a supportive husband. We thought about adopting ??" he doesn’t have any kids so it is really hard on him. This Mirena has really affected our lives.”

Katie was told by a local attorney that she only has a case if the Mirena device perforates a body organ, causes PID (pelvic inflammatory disease) or if it has to be surgically removed. She is currently seeking a Mirena attorney in another state. A quick Google search shows that a lot of women who may be infertile due to Mirena are also asking if they have a claim against Bayer.

Attorneys are currently investigating Mirena complaints and potential lawsuits to determine whether Bayer, the maker of Mirena IUD, used deceptive tactics to market its device. Katie is not alone. Many women who became pregnant while using Mirena have suffered miscarriages and could be facing infertility.
