Poughkeepsie, NYA Poughkeepsie women who received treatment at the Vassar brothers Medical Center has launched a medical malpracticelawsuit against the hospital and the deceased surgeon she holds responsible for her permanent disability.
In September 2003, 46-year-old Martha Meyer was re-admitted to the hospital six days after undergoing surgery for a perforated ulcer. A ruptured spleen and the ensuing blood loss led to a series of health complications, including brain damage, tooth loss and the amputation of her thumb and parts of two other fingers.
Attorneys for Meyers claim that hospital staff needlessly delayed various kinds of treatment, and hospital records confirm that on-call staff failed to notify Meyer's surgeon, the late Dr. Barry Jordan, of her condition until roughly an hour after she was taken to the emergency room. Jordan did not actually arrive at the hospital until six hours later.
"Basic standards were not met here and caused profound harm," Meyer's lawyer, Laurence Deutsch tells the jury in his opening statement.
