Man Confined to Wheelchair After Possible Denture Cream Zinc Poisoning

. By Charles Benson

Denture cream zinc poisoning may be the reason an Oklahoma man has been confined to a wheelchair and told that he will probably never walk again, KOCO.com reports.

Two years ago, Carl Halligan was making a living as a handyman, but one day his legs suddenly became numb, according to the news provider.

"I have to pick my legs up, put them on the bed," Halligan told the news source. "They just start jerking. I just started being able to do this."

At first, doctors couldn't figure out what had happened and speculated that he may have had cirrhosis of the liver. After being examined by a number of specialists, one thing became clear.

"They said my copper was real low, and my zinc was real high," Halligan said.

Halligan's neurologist, Dr. Calin Prodan, said the cause could be denture cream, because it contains high levels of zinc. Halligan added that he had been using the cream for 25 years.
