Johnstown, PAA Boswell, Pennsylvania woman suffering from brain injuries has filed an Unum disability lawsuit claiming the insurance company refused to give her long-term disability benefits, the Tribune-Democrat reports.
Susan G. Harris recently filed the civil lawsuit in US District Court in Johnstown, according to the news provider.
In the lawsuit, Harris claims that Unum Life Insurance Co. of Portland, Maine, lengthened the investigation of her disability claims and made some requests that were unreasonable. According to the suit, Harris has been disabled since June 2001, and has been forced to deal with short-term memory loss.
Harris, who has been unable to work since the disability, reportedly receives disability payments from Social Security.
According to the lawsuit, "on February 13, 2002, Unum wrongfully denied Harris' long term disability benefits despite prior approval of her short term disability claim."
Harris is looking to receive benefit payments plus interest from the time she was eligible until the judgment is handed down, according to the suit.
Unum is a Fortune 500 company that has more than 160 years of experience, according to its Web site.
