Lumber Liquidators Halts Sales of Allegedly Toxic Chinese Laminate Flooring

. By Lucy Campbell

Lumber Liquidators has announced it is halting sales of its highly controversial laminate flooring, imported from China. The news comes following an announcement by the company last week that it may be facing criminal charges from the Justice Department over the flooring.

The potentially damaging health effects allegedly associated with the flooring have already been the subject of an investigation by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Additionally, Lumber liquidators has faced numerous lawsuits and bad publicity from consumers who claim the flooring contains dangerous levels of formaldehyde, a chemical associated with cancer.

CNN anchor Anderson Cooper first exposed the health concerns associated with flooring on a report on 60 Minutes.

While Lumber Liquidators has released results of air tests which the company says revealed that 97% of more than 2,600 homes with the flooring were within safety levels set by the World Health Organization, California has accused it of violating its state standards, which are stricter than those of the WHO. Currently, the US has no national standards regarding formaldehyde.
