Fresno, CATwo local children were injured over the weekend as a result of a California car crash involving an Amtrak train.
On Sunday, April 25, a Fresno couple was driving down California Avenue with their three sons, ages one, two and three, in the backseat, when they came upon a railroad crossing with flashing lights. The mother, who was driving, mistakenly believed that the signal denoted a stopped or disabled train and moved ahead through the tracks, at which point the vehicle was struck by a southbound train.
The two youngest children sustained serious injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals, according to the Fresno Bee. The other two passengers and the driver avoided serious injuries, said Fresno Police Lieutenant Joe Gomez.
An Amtrak official told the Fresno Bee that no one on the train was injured.
Analysts say that the family is fortunate that the train, which was headed for Bakersfield, was slow-moving and only traveled at around 40 miles per hour at the time of the crash.
