Massachusetts College Student Files Back Injury Compensation Claim

A college student from Salem, Massachusetts, has filed a back injury compensation claim after she was one of those most seriously injured in a trolley accident two years ago.

The Salem News reports that Samantha Mattei was a freshman at Merrimack College who was on her way into Boston for a concert in May 2009 when she boarded a Green Line trolley.

A few minutes later, the trolley collided with another train that was stopped in the tunnel, an accident that has since been blamed on the driver's decision to text-message his girlfriend while operating the vehicle, the news source reports.

As a result of the accident, Mattei reportedly suffered a broken back, lacerations to her face and a severe concussion, issues that could likely cause lifelong problems, her parents said.

According to the news provider, the lawsuit seeks actual damages of more than $51,000 for medical bills and lost wages in addition to other damages to compensate Mattei for her injuries.

The Boston Globe reports that the trolley crash caused nearly $10 million in property damage.
